Culture Shock

For weeks leading up to our departure, we read and talked about the culture of Grenada. However, there is only so much you can learn from reading about something. Actually being in the country, interacting with the people, and experiencing the culture really made what we talked about come alive. There are different opportunities that being in another country provided me with. I was able to participate in things that I couldn’t in the United States.

In every interaction I had with the people of Grenada, I experienced so much kindness and joy. Whether they were talking with people they knew or were just meeting for the first time, the people were so welcoming and understanding. They each clearly cared for one another, and I was incredibly humbled by the gratitude that each person showed to us. Everyone was friendly and no one was too busy to help out.

Seeing this lived out every day in Grenada actually changed my perspective about the way I want to interact with others. If anyone looks hard enough, they could find something to complain about; however, in Grenada people chose to not let their problems effect the way they interacted with others. I was inspired by the way everyone was able to slow down and really appreciate what was around them. Bringing this perspective back to the United States could change the way I operate, especially as it is a fast paced culture.
