In Country Discoveries

In the past year or so I have realized how few diverse perspectives I have in my life. I have an awareness of other cultures and ways of living, but only from afar. For a few years now I have traveled on missions trips within the United States to help educate diverse and displaced people groups from around the world. I have seen diversity in participating on trips like this, but before traveling to Grenada, I had never actually been out of the country. I underestimated how much of a difference actually going outside of the United States would have on the way I see other lifestyles and cultures.

Going on this study abroad trip enhanced my education and widened my personal perspective. We were able to practically provide health information to local people through health fairs, symposiums, and home visits, empowering people to be passionate about their health. This trip allowed me to gain a new viewpoint on the way people view their health. I know that every person I will take care in my nursing career will be different; they will have different opinions, preferences, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds. By participating in this trip to Grenada, I was able to get a glimpse into how other cultures view health in order to broaden my perspective and understanding.
