As a study abroad trip, traveling to Grenada was aimed to help us learn and grow. It was special that the opportunity to learn came through serving others. There were many ways that we were able to do this.

We were able to participate in two different general health fairs. On our first full day in Grenada, we held a health fair, where we worked alongside other nurses and nursing students. We offered screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure height, and weight, and we also had a station for breast exams. Additionally, we had education tables where people could come with questions or concerns; our education specifically focused on blood sugar, blood pressure, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. On this day, we saw around fifty people. Several days later, we held a larger health fair, where we partnered with many local health associations. We advertised for the fair by going on the television and radio, so we expected to see many more people. We provided the same screenings as the first health fair, with the addition of vision screenings. I was mainly at the blood glucose station, and I was able to talk to people about blood sugar, diabetes, and lifestyle tips. We were there a majority of the morning and afternoon, but in keeping busy it went by fast. We saw several hundred people at this health fair, and I would consider it a great success.

In addition to the general health fairs, one afternoon, we were able to offer a health fair specifically for locals with disabilities. We offered the same general screenings and education, but it was a completely new experience in working with the disabled. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip. I am really glad that we were able to learn by helping other people.
